Boatemaa Duffuor Barfour-Awuah is an accomplished Chief Executive Officer and transformational business leader with over 18 years of experience driving strategic growth, operational excellence, and digital innovation in the insurance and financial services sectors.
Appointed CEO of Star Assurance in November 2020, Boatemaa has successfully steered the company’s evolution into the second largest insurer in Ghana, delivering strong market share growth through bold strategy execution, customer-centric innovation, and operational modernisation. She is recognised for her visionary leadership, commercial acumen, and unwavering commitment to sustainable value creation.
Boatemaa began her career at Star Assurance at an early age, gaining comprehensive, hands-on experience across the Legal, Underwriting, Accounts, Business Development, and Broker Relations units. She rose diligently through the ranks, serving as Executive Director for Finance and Administration, and later as Executive Director for Business Intelligence, before her appointment as Chief Executive Officer. Her broad operational background, strategic mindset, and deep industry expertise uniquely position her to drive performance and resilience in a dynamic market environment.
A passionate advocate for business intelligence and digital transformation, Boatemaa has led the company’s modernisation journey, introducing cutting-edge technologies and analytics platforms to enhance decision-making, streamline operations, and elevate customer experience.
Boatemaa holds dual Master’s degrees — MSc in Finance & Accounting and MSc in Management — from the University of Southampton, UK. She is a Chartered Insurer (ACII, UK) and also earned a Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Insurance Studies from the Malta International Training Centre. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Politics from the University of Leicester, UK, and is an alumna of Ghana International School, Accra.
Beyond her executive role, Boatemaa is a respected voice in corporate governance and industry development. She serves as Convener of the Motor Committee of the Ghana Insurers Association, is a Member of the Insurance Education Fund set up by the National Insurance Commission (NIC), and has served as a Board Member of Telemedia Company since 2010. She is bilingual in English and French and is passionate about advancing governance excellence, ESG leadership, and financial inclusion across emerging markets.
